Let’s Save the Teacher with Teamwork!

The importance of teamwork

by Hannah Taylor

Suitable for Whole School (Pri)

Aims

To consider how we can work together as a team.

Preparation and materials

  • Have available the following YouTube videos and the means to show them during the assembly:

    - ‘Sunny beach day – free cartoon background loop’, available at: https://youtu.be/fnzZfESP7S0 (1.20 minutes long)
    - ‘Curious George – George learns about teamwork’, available at: https://youtu.be/6RwXOh3hncQ (4.34 minutes long)

Assembly

  1. Ask the children to raise their hand if they can tell you the meaning of ‘teamwork’.

Listen to a range of responses.

Reinforce that teamwork is all about working with others to achieve something. It could involve working as a team to complete a class project, perform a show or tidy up a mess. There are so many things that we can do better as a team! Often, we get the job done more quickly when we work together.

  2. Show the YouTube video ‘Sunny beach day – free cartoon background loop’ (1.20 minutes long).

Explain that you want to demonstrate the importance of working together as a team.

Ask the children to imagine that you (the assembly leader) are stranded on a desert island. It’s hot and you don’t have anything with you.

Ask the children, ‘What items would you send to help me?’

Listen to a range of responses.

Suggestions might include suncream, drinking water, a boat, a sharp knife, some food, a bed or hammock, a fishing net, some medicine and a sunhat.

  3. Next, ask the children to imagine that you have fallen into a hole and can’t get out. Ask them how they would help you to get out.

Listen to a range of responses.

Suggestions might include calling an ambulance or the fire brigade, and fetching a rope or ladder.

Tell the children that if you are ever stranded on an island, or if you ever fall down a hole, you are glad to know that they could all save you!

  4. Explain that you are going to show a video about teamwork.

Show the YouTube video ‘Curious George – George learns about teamwork’ (4.34 minutes long).

Time for reflection

Ask the children to close their eyes and imagine that they are the person stranded on the desert island.

- What things would they miss?
- Which people would they miss?

Now encourage the children to think about what they are thankful for, and reflect on how they could all work together to achieve kindness and other great things in the world.

Encourage the children to think about how they can ‘save’ each other in situations during the day. Examples could include helping someone with their work, or inviting someone to join in when they are on their own in the playground.

Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you for guiding me.
Thank you for
my imagination and creativity.
Thank you for my friends, my family and the adults who help me.
Amen.
